My kitten has green poop and a painful, draining lump on its side.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We adopted a stray kitten 3 days ago and he seems around 7 weeks old. He's been having green and mushy poop. He drinks a lot of water and eats some dry kibble. However, a spray of yellowish-peach liquid came out of his backside. I wiped it off and it does not have an odor, and there seems to be a hard lump on his side. I patted the area and more liquid came out. He also seemed to cry out in pain. I cannot go visit the vet at this time.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear your kitten is having issues. Based on what you are describing, I would be concerned your kitten may have an abscess on its side that is draining. I would recommend your kitten be evaluated by a veterinarian; if it is an abscess or infection, it would need antibiotics to resolve. There are multiple causes for diarrhea, including intestinal parasites, a viral infection, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, or some other underlying issue. I would warm compress your kitten's side, and get in to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Good luck!
