My dog has a growing dark purple lump on his gums. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 65 lbs

My dog has a lump on his gums that was between 2 teeth but has now grown to.the size of.a nut and has dark purple.dots on it. I now.see, after 6 months of not looking, that a new lump is growing out of the original lump. What does this sound like to you? I should also state he is almost 7 y/O and dying slowly (but too fast for me) from a bum heart. He was given 2 weeks to live just over a year ago.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
