Why does my dog stare at my cat so much? Are they best friends?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 months and 29 days old | 25 lbs

It boggles me how concentrated my dog is when he’s around the cat. She has finally let him into her bubble by being the house more and he is so happy. He can just stare at her all day. I just am curious about why! Why is he so interested? Are they best friends? His adoration for her is a head scratcher haha cause he sees her everyday.

I am guessing that, like most other homes, the things in yours (furniture, rugs, curtains, appliances, etc.) are stationary. After a while, he doesn't really "see" them . . . they just become background stuff. Then along comes Duchess, who runs and jumps and plays! She's like a moving picture for your dog, so she becomes his focus. Your information doesn't specify whether or not Duchess is spayed. If not, she may also be coming into season, and that could be interesting to the dog too. Be thankful that they have bonded instead of trying to kil each other!
