Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 57 lbs

Hi my shar pei cross cattle has sprained his ankle. His ankle and foot are swollen. I have applied ice packs regularly over 48hrs and kept him indoors. He was limping to start with but is now walking on it and running when he gets the chance to go outside. There are no wounds but i am worried that the swelling hasnt gone down yet. How long will the swelling last and should i take him to the vets. He is a very active dog and i have to go back to work tomorrow so i am worried.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Romulus's care today! Lameness, swelling or pain can be signs of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. I highly recommend strict rest which at times can make a big difference. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
