My dog took Alleve for hip pain. Is it safe? Should I make her vomit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 9 years and 4 months old | 75 lbs

Hello, I gave my dog (black lab 75 lbs, 10 years old) one Alleve pill (220mg) less than 2 hours ago because she seemed to be having some hip discomfort. Unfortunately I did not look up to see if this was safe for her at the time. She is not exhibiting any symptoms of toxicity it appears but should I try and induce vomitting with 3% hydrogen peroxide just in case?

The only case report of a severe toxic reaction in a dog after a single dose of Alleve involved an elderly dachshund that received 35.7 mg/kg of the drug. your dog received approximately 6.5 mg/kg, fortunately this is not likely to cause any serious toxic reaction, inducing vomiting is not needed in this case but in the future i strongly recommend avoiding this medication altogether as well as any other pain killer from your personal cabinet.
