So recently Kika has been treated for hookworm, her stools and behaviors went back to normal. She’s finished her antibiotics a few days ago, but today she’s having loose stools again and she will not drink anything. I’ve been bribing with chicken broth and pedialyte for electolytes. Still no water intake. Any idea what this could be now? No vomit, still wants to play.

How long ago was she treated for Hookworms? Did she receive a second treatment? Typically with Hookworms two treatments are needed. I would also recommend rechecking a stool to make sure she doesn't have any other type of parasites. Did she get into anything recently or any type of new food? If this is the case then she may just have an upset stomach. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I forgot to add I would recommend trying to feed her some boiled chicken and white rice. If you do this then she will get her water that way. I would also call your veterinarian in the morning to discuss a second treatment, treating for a intestinal upset and rechecking a stool sample.

Poor pup! Hookworms should not cause her to go days without eating, so I would definitely recommend taking her back to your vet first thing in the morning. She may need blood work or other testing to see if something more serious is wrong.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. At this stage I would consider an abdominal ultrasound as the next diagnostic step. If you still are not getting an answer I would suggest a referral at an internal medicine specialist. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Inappetence and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Buddy reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least, they could perhaps check for parasites again to make sure that there are no other different parasites affecting him now and they can proceed based on findings. Other possible diagnostics include abdominal imaging and general lab work. Other medications for diarrhea can be considered. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good day!
