Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu
My ShihTzu is about 10 and has a very, very short nose even for his breed! He is almost blind. The vet said because his tear ducts don't work. He gets mucus which dries and cakes on around eyes. I clean them daily but he resists having his face touched in any way. I make clicking noise with my mouth for him to find me and he spends most of his time sleeping! Is there anything I can do to improve his life? He's usually by my feet or in my lap or in a dog bed nearby. I take him walking on leash.

I recommend cleaning the eye discharge with a warm cloth to remove it all from around the eye and the fur below. They I would apply a thin film of Vaseline on the fur below the eye to keep the fur from irritating the eye and it will prevent the discharge from sticking to the fur so you won't have to clean it so often. You are doing a great job with him. He sounds like in spite of his limitations he has a comfortable, happy life.
