My sick 3-week kitten isn't improving. Is her doxy safe to use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 16 days old | 0.5 lbs

I have a very sick 3-4 week kitten. Our shelter vet prescribed .45 ml doxy once daily and .015 clindamycin injection BID. This is day 7 of foxy and day 3 of clindamycin. She doesn't seem to be improving. I've heard bad things about doxy and asked the vet about switching but she insists on doxy. She refuses to eat and I have access to clavamox but our vet wont give me a dose to switch her and the shelter wont pay for her to go to another vet when we already have one. Should I switch her anyway?

Hello. I am afraid this may be the only way to save this kitten. Your shelter vet may be financially constrained to administer whatever antibiotics are on hand, & as I said earlier, doxycycline is contraindicated in such young animals. I hope you can have her seen soon. Thank again for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
