My kitten has diarrhea. Could it be parasites and is it contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

My kitten sally might have intestinal parasites or other problems due to anal glands being inflamed and having diarrhea for multiple days. Right now she is in the restroom for potty training. Is this contagious for other animals or humans? But her anal glands aren’t inflamed anymore, yet she is still having diarrhea. (The pic is from a few days ago)

And I forgot to say, if it is intestinal parasites, it would be contagious to humans or animals if they ingested any fecal material. Generally, I recommend deworming all pets in the house at once to make sure they don’t pass it back and forth.

I’m sorry to hear about Sally. If she is a kitten, I would definitely recommend trying a deworming product for roundworms- a common reason for diarrhea in kittens. Something like this would work fine. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/excel-roundworm-cat-de-wormer Also add a probiotic like purina fortiflora. If no improvement in 48 hours or if worsening in any way at any time, it’s time to see your vet. Bring a stool sample. (Remove all but a tiny amount of litter from the box to try to keep the stool from getting mashed up in the litter.)
