My dog's spay stitches broke, incision infected & swollen. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 27 lbs

Tofys spay was done 3 days ago. Her breast was swollen and red and painful to touch. I have taken her to vet, vet told me it is due to infection. He pushed out some red pus. He changed antibiotics. Today at night, we also tried and pushed the swollen red breast and a huge amount of red pus come out as in picture I have attached. Also now the stitches are broken. What could be the reason behind this, can you explain me in detail, I'm crying right now. I think vet is not telling me real reason.

You need to take your dog back to the vet in the morning and he will have to close the incision again. If you do not trust your vet, you should take Tofy to another reputable veterinarian to do this. Infection happens frequently in wounds in India, due to the climate and flies. So this unfortunately is not unusual. Once the vet has closed the wound again, you will need to cover it up with a t shirt or a light bandage to keep flies from getting to the wound. Tofy must not lick the wound.
