My senior dog has spondylosis. Should she rest or exercise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 12 years and 3 months old | 54 lbs

Hi. My 12.5 year old black lab was rushed to the vet on Friday morning as she appeared to have lost power in her back end and was in severe discomfort. X-rays were taken and our vet has said that she has spondylosis which appears to have fractured. We’ve been told to exercise her “little but often.” I took her out today for a five minute walk but she really struggled and was dragging her hind leg slightly. My question is should we let her rest for a while or continue with the short walks?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bernie. She sounds very sore. I would give her some time to rest. Then only walk her as far as she can handle. Fresh air and being outside is good for a dog's well being, however the walk needs to be kept within her comfort level. If she shows signs of struggling, you have over done it. She may only be able to go for a minute or two to start. Follow her lead. I hope this information helps!
