What issues might an older pet store puppy have with training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 20 days old | 4.6 lbs

Hi I am thinking of getting a puppy from a pet store he has been there since he was about 8 weeks he is now 36 weeks. Do you know of problems with puppies that have been "institutionalized " that long. He has been socialized well. He does pee in his box and on the store floors. He does not go outside ever.

As long as he’s been well socialized then I’m not concerned. With crate training, leash walks to potty and praise and consistency he should be fairy easy to housebreak. Dogs that come from puppy mills or shelters where they are in cages all the time and not socialized can become shy and have some behavior problems, sometimes for a long time. Small dogs such as Paddington can be more challenging to train because they are cute and get carried around so be patient and stick to a daily routine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Paddington.
