My hamster scratches a lot and has a cut. Allergies, mites, or dry skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 24 days old | 0 lbs

My hamster scratches himself a lot and he appears to have a small cut behind his ear but is otherwise healthy, what could this mean? The cut is not bleeding but it is red, he's very fluffy and is super active so it's hard to see very close. Is he scratching excessively because of boredom or something else? He has a cage that is 450 sq inches. Can I do something for him? Maybe he has allergies?

There are a number or reasons why Blizzard is scratching himself a lot. It could be allergies such as a contact allergy, but it could also be that he is suffering from dry skin or mites. The only way to know for sure is to have him seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing his itching and can prescribe a treatment for him. I recommend taking him into the vet first thing on Monday. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
