Poor Lucy! It's very concerning that a three month old puppy is not able to stand on her back leg. She could have severely injured her leg such as breaking a bone or tearing a ligament making her unable to use it. Unfortunately it's illegal for the experts on Pet Coach to prescribe or recommend any medications. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. There is also no way I could say what treatment would be best for her without seeing her in person and diagnosing the cause of her problem. As I said, it's very concerning when such a young puppy won't use her rear leg, and because of that, I recommend an immediate vet visit. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. I am sorry to hear about her recent troubles. How frustrating! There is a muscle known as the iliospoas that wraps around from the lower back to the pelvis. If this muscle is strained, it is extremely painful. This can be detected on a physical exam, but would not show up on an x-ray. Other problems can be related the spine itself such as disc disease. The most common cause of rear limb lameness is a torn cruciate ligament in the knee. Has she had stifle x-rays? More rare conditions are autoimmune joint disease or a tick borne infection. Both of these are typically accompanied by a fever. You may consider a referral to see an orthopedic specialist if you are having trouble reaching a diagnosis. I hope this information helps!

Without xrays and records of the physical exam it is impossible to guess what might be causing these symptoms. Paralysis of 3 months in a young pup is unlikely to resolve bit referral to a specialist neurologist and orthopedic surgeon may provide a full diagnosis and highlight any possible treatment options. If he has limited mobility then quality of life should be assessed and it may not be fair to expect him to continue most especially if any incontinence develops

My 10 month old puppy is holding her back leg off the ground.
This is nearly always a sign of pain - Lucy may have injured her paw or another bone joint in her leg. Muscle, tendon and even bone injuries like fractures can make a dog reluctant to bear weight on a leg. Occasionally some infections can cause joint pain as well. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian- they can localize the pain and may recommend an x-ray or other testing. I do not recommend giving any over the counter medications for pain - this can limit the options that your vet has for safe effective prescription medications.

14 plus year old female dog about 40 lbs is losing muscle in hind legs and having increasing difficulty standing and walking although she still can. I notice amazon sells rear led braces. Should we try those? Or is there something else you recommend.
The rear leg braces are not useful. If she needs assistance getting up I recommend a Help em Up harness by Blue Dog designs. Taking Lucy to a Rehab veterinarian would be good if there is one near you. They can give you exercises to do at home and they may offer hydrotherapy and other treatments that can improve her comfort and mobility. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Lucy.

My 2 month old dog fell off the couch and landed on her back, she started to limp afterwards on her back leg. What should I do to help?
Given her age, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays may be indicated to rule out fractures. Restrict her activity to just leash walks for elimination. Avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play. Do not medicate her as many OTC drugs cannot be used in puppies or may be toxic to dogs.

My dog suddenly can't walk on her hind legs. She is dragging them behind her but we can't afford to take her to the vet. Is she in pain?
Oh dear! This is a very serious problem - I'm afraid she really has to see a vet right away. She may have a herniated disc in her back causing the paralysis, or some other neurologic problem affecting her spinal cord. She may be in pain, or she may have no feeling at all in her rear legs - it's impossible to say without an exam. She needs immediate treatment to have a reasonable chance of regaining function in her rear legs, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do at home that will help her. If costs are a concern, you can see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help. You could also apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics: www.carecredit.com

Poor Lucy! Limping is a sign of pain in dogs, so it is hurting her if she's limping. Because she has had her leg lifted up only touching it to the ground sometimes and it's been a day of her doing this, I think taking her into the vet now would be a good idea. It's clearly hurting her, and she likely needs pain meds. Please do not give her any human pain medication, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe a safe pain medication for her, and can diagnose what is causing her to be non-weight bearing.

The Trineurosol is just a vitamin injection. That is not really treating anything. My suggestion would be to have him x-rayed. This can be a severe case of hip dysplasia or a problem with this spine (a protruding disk, a fractured vertebra, etc). He needs some stronger medications. If this is a neurological disorder then he needs steroids and if this is an orthopedic issue he needs strong non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Start with the x-rays. This is not something you can treat at home with home remedies. Best wishes.

hello my dog was accidentally kicked in the side by my mother and since (3 hours ago) has been constantly shivering. in addition, whenever you come close to her injured spot she growls. she also cannot stand up on two paws. she is a 3 year old Malte
I sounds like Lucy is pretty painful. I would recommend a vet visit to assess for injuries and to get pain medication for her. Please do not give otc pain medicine as they are not metabolized well by dogs and many are toxic. I would let her rest in a confined area until you can get her in and try to limit her jumping on and off of furniture. Good luck. Thank you for using pet coach.

My puppy is bitten by some dogs and he does not play both the back legs ... Then he can continue his feet .... Please understand my language, I do not speke English
By his posture I am very worried about his back. I Am concerned that his spinal cord may be damaged. It also could be an infectious cause such as rabies or a parasite called neospora. Or even meningitis. He needs to be examined by a veterinarian to decide what the best course of treatment is and to make sure that you and your family are not at risk.
