What dog treats can I use to hide my dog's pills or medicine?

Do you have dog treats that a med such as Tramadol can be hidden inside so that the dog will take it ?

Yes, there are dog treats you can get where you can hide pills in them! They are called Pill Pockets and you can get them from a pet store. You can also try hiding the pills in peanut butter or wrapped up in a small piece of cheese or chicken.

What can I dissolve tramadol in for my dog? She hates the taste.
Try not to touch the tramadol with your fingers when wrapping it in something as the residue / powder from the tablets will get on your fingers and on the outside of the treat you are wrapping it in. Pour the tablet out onto the counter and then drop a piece of cheese over the tablet or something else you can wrap around the tablet. Give several pieces without the tablet first and then give her the piece with the tablet in it after. If you crush it and mix it with something, it will taste bitter regardless. The easiest way is to keep it in tablet form. I hope this helps!

Yes of course. You can try hiding the pills in his freeze dried treat or any treat for that matter. If he grows tired of that too you can also try “Pill pockets” which are pliable soft aromatic treats specifically designed for giving pets daily medication. Medicating pets can be very frustrating - particularly since Mattie is so picky! I never recommend dissolving medications in water to give via a syringe because in most cases, the medication falls out of the mouth so there is no way of knowing how much was actually ingested. Personally, my favorite way to medicate animals is simply to push the pills down the back of the throat, provided that Mattie is agreeable and unlikely to bite you. As you mention, hiding pills in peanut butter is often successful, but if you choose to continue using this, make sure your peanut butter does not contain xylitol, as it is highly toxic to dogs. I don't know if they are available in the UK, but Greenies makes a product called pill pockets which are basically highly palatable, doughy, pliable treats in which you can hide medications for pets.

My puggy is sick and is been suggested to be given some tablets by the vet. She is not willing to have it even if it is mixed with her regular food or with milk. How can I give it to her? Can I mix it with honey n give her?
If she is not on dietary restricitons you can try hiding the pill in some soft cheese or peanut butter. Sometimes canned dog food works. . Some dogs just won't eat medications on food. If that is the case you may have to actually put the pill in the back of her mouth and get her to swallow. Hello. If Snowden likes ice cream, then yes, definitely use this as a treat. If she refuses the ice cream with the pill, you can try crushing the pill & mixing it into something liquid ( like melted ice cream ). Use a syringe or small baster, pull back a little on the corner of her lips on one side & squirt in. I would also try jarred meat based baby food. Many dogs like this. It would probably be easiest just to pill Buddy directly so you don't have to deal with breaking down the pill or hiding it in food, especially so you ensure he gets the correct dosage (some pills such as capsules should never be broken apart anyway.). You can get a syringe and fill it with water, and then place the pill as far back in Buddy's throat as you can, then immediately squire the water into his mouth. This will help him to swallow and make the pill go down easier.

My dog has to take the antibiotic tablet Amoxyclav 200g (half a tablet twice daily). Will crushing the tablet into powder form and then mixing it into warm food diminish its effectiveness?
It will not, however it will make the food taste terrible and make it much more likely that your dog will not eat the food and you will have wasted a pill. I would suggest getting a product called Pill Pockets. They are great and you can wrap the pill them and your dog will eat them right up! Cream cheese also works wonders! :)

Hello there and thank you for your post! I am not sure what medication you are trying to hide, but you could potentially have it compounded into a liquid form if that is easier. I've had clients use pieces of canned tuna to mash around the pill and that seemed to work well. I've had other clients use pieces of liverwurst to mash around the pill as well. You could also invest in a Pill Popper, which you can find in pet stores. Basically, a Pill Popper is a syringe like device that contains a hollow rubber tip which you can insert capsules or pills and safely administer them into the back of your cat's mouth. My poor pug had 13 teeth removed and I hv 2 weeks of shoving 3 pills down her 2 x day and hiding in food doesn't work. With her poor sensitive mouth, I am at a loss. A horrible experience for us both! Help
Poor Gizzy and poor you! I don't know what food you have tried to hide the pill in, but I'm going to suggest some techniques that work for me. Peanut butter is always a good one, as it sticks to the roof of a dog's mouth as well as the pill, and dogs will swallow the pill while eating the peanut butter. You can try a super smelly, tasty food that your dog likes and hide the food in there. Hiding the pill in a cooked meatball may work. Just make sure the pill is completely coated and hiding by the food. Give a small amount of the taste food first before hiding the pill in some of it so Gizzy doesn't become suspicious. You can also try commercial pill hiding products, which you can get from the pet store.
