My dog's back legs stopped working, in pain. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 22 lbs

My dog has been having back issues. He is a 2 yr old French bulldog. X rays showed that but he has been doing better since being on steroids and pain meds but yesterday he was in pain and now he just stopped being able to use his back legs. He is panting and having a hard time getting comfortable or laying down. What should i do?

Poor Johnny! Given that he just stopped using his back legs, is panting, and having a hard time getting comfortable or lying down, I would say he needs to see a vet immediately. I'm not sure what kind of back issues he is having, but if he is suffering from intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), it could be that a disc in his back is pressing on the nerves leading to his hind legs preventing him from being unable to use them. That is a medical emergency, and something that needs to be treated now or he could potentially lose use of his back legs for good. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
