Why is my large dog shedding fur in clumps in cold weather?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 74 lbs

Hi! My Irish wolfhound/Bernise Mountain mix is dropping fur in clumps. I know it’s the end of April but it’s still 30-40 degrees F. When he sheds, it’s in clumps. It seems that it’s too early for shedding but I may be wrong.

All dogs start their seasonal shed at different times. If the hair and skin underneath looks normal then I am less worried. However, if there are bald spots, crusting, red skin, or itchiness then Woody should be seen by your veterinarian. With his breed I imagine he has some major thick fur to shed at this time of year. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
