My indoor cat is turning one. What adult Science Diet is best?

I current feed my cat science diet for kittens she will be a year old in August. Which science diet do I incorporate when she is an adult. She is an indoor cat if that helps.

Ellie is so gorgeous! I love her fur markings. You have a great question. I recommend feeding her Science Diet Adult Indoor when she turns a year old. Science Diet is a fine food, but Royal Canin is also a good diet. I recommend any adult cat food that has an AFFCO statement on the back of the bag that says its complete and balanced for adult animals.

I was reading a few questions people have put on here and they said that their cat choked ok the indoor science diet for adult cats because it's so big. What other science diet would you recommend if that is an issue?
I personally haven't found that to be an issue, as cat food typically isn't large because cats do not have big mouths. Unfortunately there is no Science Diet small bites for cats, those types of diets are for dogs because they do vary so much in mouth size due to breed differences. You can try the Science Diet Indoor, but if you find it too big for Ellie, Science Diet Feline adult is just fine for her. Be sure to feed her according to the package instructions so you don't give her too much food, and make sure she has plenty of play time to get exercise. I hope this helps :-)

Hi Ali! Thanks for using Pet Coach! I suggest you take her off the kitten food. Kitten food is very high in calories. I know that bag is labeled for up to one year but I usually recommend that kittens switch to adult food at 7-8 months of age. So, yes, adult indoor food would be indicated here. Also, do not just keep the bowl full - measure out the daily amount she needs based on the recommendations on the bag of food you are feeding; split into multiple small meals. Feed her to her ideal weight and not her current weight. Example: if she is 12 pounds and should be 9 pounds then use the feeding recommendation for a 9 pound cat. Always feed to the low end of the range the bag gives you especially since you are giving hearts and kidneys as well. Thank you for submitting your question! Most indoor cats tend to be a bit over weight as a result of plenty of food and little exercise. First off, encourage plenty of play time. You can feed them on elevated surfaces so they have to jump up to get a meal. You can also hide kibble around the house (out of their pre-measured daily amount) to engage them in their natural hunting behavior. This is mentally stimulating for them and encourages more exercise. Science Diet is a high quality food and would be a good choice for them. I do not typically recommend grain free formulas as they are high in carbohydrates and result in weight gain. Measure the food daily for each cat and feed them separately (several small meals throughout the day). This way you will how much each cat is receiving. Lastly, feed them less than recommended for their weight bracket since they are both overweight. Good luck!

Hi there! Hunny Cat is very cute! I believe it's better to feed cats canned food. It has more moisture and adds a little bit more hydration to their daily intake. Later in life, cats can commonly develop kidney disease and/or urinary bladder disease. In both cases, cats will benefit greatly from the increased water content of a canned diet. The canned food is a lot better too to help keep an indoor cat's weight in check. All indoor cats have a tendency to become overweight, as they don't exercise as much as feral cats. Since cats usually will ingest the canned food right away, it is easier to portion the food out and also provide cats with meal times. This is very helpful to increase their metabolism, and to help discourage them from gaining weight. Far too often, we see cats being fed a pile of dried food in a bowl where they eat buffet-style on and off all day long. Science diet and Purina have very good cat formulas for cats. I would find one that is appropriate for your cats age and health status. For example, they make a hairball formula if that is problem or an over weight formula if weight loss is needed there is no benefit of feeding dry over canned, so it is personal preference for that.

Yes, I personally like Royal Canin diets. For her age, just the regular Adult food is fine. ( https://www.royalcanin.com/ca/en_ca/cats/products/vet-products?specialneeds=0ad835cc921d4d0cb3ee61a8cc461fbe&feedingperiod=78.3&filter=643ceeb4-c516-477f-96db-fd7ee1b41ec0 ) She can eat either wet or dry; whichever she prefers and what you can afford. Canned food can be very expensive if that is all you are feeding. You can also feed a combination of both wet and dry if you'd like. Feed her according to the directions on the packaging. If you do both wet and dry you need to make sure you don't overfeed her. She is already at her maximum weight so if you notice weight gain you will need to back off on how much you are feeding.

Great question! I really like Iams, I feed it to my own cats. Be sure to get a kitten formulated food. Other brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, and Purina ProPlan. I hope this helps.
