My cow is mouth breathing and depressed after calving. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old

My cow had trouble calving and since then she randomly mouth breathes for a few breathes and then stops. This only happens randomly and no more than a few times a day. Her actual respiration rate is normal. She is also very very slightly depressed. She has no other symptoms of any sort. Should I be worried?

Yes, I would be a bit worried. She may have some retained placenta or a uterine tear from the dystocia. If either of those are the case, she could end up with a life-threatening bacterial infection. I suggest you get your vet out there to check her out. It is better to be safe than sorry in this instance. Best wishes.
