My kitten's eye is opaque and bulging. Is she too young for surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1.5 lbs

Hello, few days ago, my 2.5 months old cat, Rosie's right eye had a lot of rheum. I took her to my vets in my country and they told me to use eye drop for her. But thing's getting worse when her eye started to look opaque and bulging. I asked my vets again but they said that Rosie is too young for the operation. I really dont know what to do to help her. Hope to hear the response from you, Thank you, Alice Tran

This eye is now blind and is likely to be painful - removal of the eye would be the kindest procedure in this case although anaesthetic is more risky at such a young age. I recommend seeking referral if your local vet is not comfortable with the anaesthetic or procedure in such a young kitten as this eye will be painful until it is removed and is at risk of rupture and serious infection

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Rosie is definitely quite young but this does not mean she cannot have the procedure to remove her eye. Being at a younger age this does put her at an increased risk being under anesthesia but I have anesthetized patients as young as her many times before and they generally do absolutely fine under anesthesia. I would push to have the procedure done as this is uncomfortable for Rosie and this could rupture and become infected. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
