My outdoor cat has fleas after Advantage. Is it safe to reapply?

Dr. Melanie: Hi! I've been putting advantage on my outdoor kitty for the past two months and it seems to work for a bit then I see flea dirt about a week later. I read it may take a couple of months of applications ? I put it on her 3 weeks ago , is it safe to re apply or try something else ( I have comfortis for my ferals so was thinking to try that ) . Do you think I should keep trying with the advantage ? thank you

Hello! It is safe to use the Advantage again now, so I recommend reapplication of that product. Keep in mind as well that the outdoors will have a continual source of fleas, and there's not much you can do about that for Chiky. You can washing her bedding in hot and soapy water to kill any fleas in there. If she's allowed inside, you will need to disinfect the home as well. Vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I hope this helps :-)

Since it's been two weeks since you late applied the Advantage, you can try another dose of it. He can also have Capstar again. Be sure to disinfect your home, as that will be a continuing source of fleas. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. Can a second dose of Advantage at two and half or three weeks to soon to give? It doesn’t seem like it’s working she’s had three doses since I rescued her.
No 3 weeks should be fine. If you are still seeing fleas, then you likely have an infestation in your house and yard. Be sure all pets in and out of the house are also on flea preventative. I would also be sure to treat your house and yard for fleas since fleas actually live in the environment and not on the animal. You may also consider trying a different flea preventative like bravecto or cheristan for cats. I hope this helps!

Hi and thank you for your question on Boop by Petco! Advantage II is not safe to use twice in 48 hours. The product safety specifications indicate that it should not be applied more often than once every 7 days for cats. I would not want to overload her system with more topical product in case she received a full dose and all of the dose was absorbed. In a week, it would be okay to apply another application. We noticed last week that Chubbs had fleas, we admisnistered Advantage that we purchased at Petco. Tomorrow is a week and we’re still finding fleas on Chubbs and around the house! Did we not administer the treatment correctly, should do another treat
If you haven't treated the house, that will be a continuing source of fleas. I would call an exterminator to kill the fleas. As for Chubbs, give him Capstar once a day for the next seven days. It's safe to give one pill daily, and starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. When it has been two weeks since you last applied the Advantage, you can apply another dose. I hope this helps!

I have a 7 week old kitten that has a lot of fleas. I bought kitten advantage and put it on her last night. I made the mistake of giving her a bath about 3-4 hours after it was applied. Should I reapply advantage?
I would check the instructions on the package of the product you applied for instructions but most say not to bathe within 24 hours of application. I would be worried about overdosing as she would have absorbed most of the chemical already but some may have washed off. I would wait to retreat and see if there are any live fleas in a few days. You can continue treating with grooming with a flea comb and treated baths until the package says you can retreat (usually a month later)

Only 5% of the flea population is adult, biting fleas at any one time. You should use an insecticidal flea spray such as acclaim or indorex to address the 95% eggs and larvae which are hatching and jumping back on to Padme. Oral flea medications such as comfortis can also be helpful in long haired cats as it can be difficult to apply topicals thoroughly onto the skin and may be less effective than predicted

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, you may in about 5-6 days. However, I would highly recommend you use a stronger and likely more efficacious product. There are plenty of flea products in the market and a lot of them are very effective. I prefer Bravecto and Frontline plus. You can pick one of those products. The nice thing about Bravecto is that it is very effective and it is only applied once every 3 months. You can also use a product called Capstar along with one of the previously mentioned products which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. Remember to vacuum all the surfaces that have contact with your pup regularly. This is very likely going to work well. Good luck and have a great day!

I would not use the Advantage so close to applying another treatment. Wait at least 3 weeks since previous treatment. It may still be killing the fleas on the cat, but if fleas are still in the environment, new ones are jumping onto the cats. I would recommend treating the environment to help get rid of fleas more effectively. It will take at least 4 months to get rid of fleas if you are treating ONLY the pets. We treated our 2 cats with a generic Advantage 2 a week ago. We just received our Revolution in the mail. How soon can we apply the Revolution for their flea infestation? They're 5lbs, and 6lbs. 5 mos old.
Great question! According to the package insert for Advantage 2, you can safely reapply once every two weeks, so it would be fine to give them the Revolution now. You can also give them Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and is safe to give with the Revolution. Don't forget you will need to disinfect the environment as well. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. I hope this helps!
