My senior dog has a growing lump. Should I worry about a tumor?

Wow, that is quite large on Tiny! In a dog his age, I would be very concerned that is a malignant tumor. Unfortunately those can be common in senior dogs. This is something that needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible, as if it's a malignant tumor, there is a good chance it can spread. It likely will also need to be removed surgically. Please take him into a vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I know how this can be concerning for you to find a possible mass on your pet. Especially an older pet like Tiny. Masses on he skin can go either way and be either benign or cancerous. Sometimes it is easy to tell non-cancerous masses just be looking at them, but often times it requires a sample to be taken of the mass and then sending it off for analysis. Since it has been there for more than a couple of weeks, it is likely a mass and should be sampled by your vet to determine exactly what this is and if we should be concerned or not. I would recommend scheduling an appt for Tiny in the next week or so to get things sorted out. Best of luck to you and Tiny and I hope everything works out well for you both!

Yes, I would be concerned. Without seeing a vet, you can't know for sure if this lump is a lipoma. In a 10 year old dog, there is always a concern that any lump could be malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I would call the vet today to make an appointment for him to be seen. I hope this helps!

My pit bull has had a large knot on her hind leg she's had it for over a year and now she's got the big one and several small one's around it should I be worried?
I am sorry to hear about Tiny. I would definitely recommend a visit to your vet to look at this knot. It sounds like she likely has a tumor. Some tumors are benign and we can just keep and eye on them and remove if they get too large (such as a lipoma) others are more aggressive and may require surgery right away and checking internally to be sure the tumor hasn't spread. I would recommend what is called a "fine needle aspirate". Your vet sticks a small needle into the mass to collect cells which are put on a microscope slide. We can use these to identify what type of tumor we are dealing with and to help make our treatment plan.

This growth on your dog could be a benign tumor or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious growth should be examined by a vet. The vet can do a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the growth to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's typically painless to the dog and relatively quick and easy to perform. I would have your dog seen by a vet on Monday to have the growth examined and diagnoses so it can be treated.

It could be that Lady has a cyst causing this lump. In a senior dog, it could also be a malignant tumor or a benign tumor. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. If your vet sent her to a surgeon, then I would suspect that your vet believes it needs to be removed. I'm sorry you felt this surgeon was only worried about money, so I'd suggest speaking to your vet about a referral to another surgeon to get this lump diagnosed and possibly removed. It sounds like it's quite large if it's grapefruit size, and if it continues to grow, it could affect her ability to walk. In addition, if it is malignant, it needs to be removed as soon as possible. Can you tell me what this is? She’s an indoor dog.
It looks like a small tumor which are not uncommon on older dogs. If it has come up suddenly I would get her in to see your vet right away since aggressive cancers will pop up suddenly and change rapidly. Even if it is benign, if she is in good health it might be a good idea to have it removed so it doesn't get caught and injured by her day to day routine. Your vet will do an exam, possible sample some cells from it to try to identify it and bloodwork if you opt to remove it to determine her suitability for anesthesia. It looks from the photo like it would not be a complicated process to remove it.

This certainly is a pretty large tumor and you should have that examined by your veterinarian. Your vet will give your dog a general exam to make sure she is in good condition and fit and then probably will take a fine needle aspirate (tissue of the tumor taken with a fine needle, and not painful) to be sent to a lab to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant and whether it should be removed. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian soon.

Hi and tanks for your question this afternoon. It is hard to say exactly what the mass could be without examining him and taking a sample of the mass first. This should be done at your local veterinarian's office to determine if it is something of concern or not and if it needs to be removed. It is good that it does not seem to bother him, but I would still have a sample taken just to be sure. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
