My cat has a spreading rash on her belly. Should I use steroid cream?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 7 lbs

I put Advantage Multi on her. A few days later she had a rash or hives on her lower abdomen (left side). A week later it’s like this (right side). I tried some lavender and tea tree oils but it continued to spread. I’ve been using a probiotic lotion on her, not worse but not better. Otherwise she’s normal: eating, drinking, sleeping, playing, loving, using the litter box, etc. Does she need a steroid cream?

This is a serious skin condition. Please do not use tea tree oil on your cat as it is toxic to cats. This is likely a serious bacterial infection that needs to be seen by a veterinarian. It is way past any home remedy stage. Using a steroid cream would only cover any allergic reactions, however it does look like there is both allergic and bacterial. Please take Hannah to a vet ASAP. Do not let her lick the area.
