My dog has recurring scaly, itchy skin patches. What's going on?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 15 years and 3 months old | 14 lbs

My dog has scaly, itchy raised patches on her muzzle, eyebrows, ears and knees. Our vet scraped her twice with no results, but is treating her with Ivermectin. This is the second time she's had this. The first time, the vet tech said she smelled "Yeasty". They treated her with Clavamox & prednisone. My I ask your opinion?

Poor Angel! It could be mange but the thickness on her ears looks like yeast and bacteria could also be involved. If she didn't get worse on the prednisone, this make mange less likely but not impossible. With her sores being so bad on her nose, I would strongly recommend to have it biopsied and also cultured to get a quicker diagnosis so she can be treated properly quicker. The quicker we can get her started on the proper meds the quicker she will start to heal. I hope this helps!
