Chow Chow puppy prices: Does paying more guarantee a healthier dog?

Hi will I get a better qaulity puppy if I pay more for it? I want another chow chow it has to be kc reg and some are £1000 some are £1500 and some £2000 why are some more expensive than others all the adverts have kc puppies on the website I’m looking at I want a healthy puppy are the more expensive ones gonna be healthier in the long run I’m so confused I paid £1900 for the chow I have now and she’s perfectly healthy what’s the difference in price mean???

I love Chows, I have one myself and think they are the best dogs! You won't necessarily get a better quality puppy if you pay more for it. Some breeders will charge more depending on their expenses and what procedures are done on the puppies as well as the dam and sire. What's most important is to find out what tests have been done on the dam and sire. That will determine if your puppy will be better quality or not. The tests I'm referring to are for potential hereditary problems. In the Chow, this would be for the eyes, hips, and joints. I will include a link below about Chows and tests they should have done before breeding to make sure that their puppies are as healthy as possible. Ask the breeder if they've done any of these tests, and ask to see the paperwork. If they haven't done the tests, do not get a puppy from them. I love Chow Chows! I have a red female Chow Chow who is almost 10 years old, and she is just the best dog. No, it's not true that Chow Chow's diets should be cut down on meat. I personally feed my Chow Iams dog food, and she does great on it. There could be a couple of reasons why Heisenberg is reluctant to eat. He could have a dental problem that is making it painful for him to eat, or it could be he is suffering from a medical illness causing a decrease in appetite. Due to this, I would have him checked out by a vet in the next couple of days. just to make sure everything is ok health wise with him. If he is healthy, then it may simply be that he doesn't like the flavor of food you are feeding. Royal Canin is an excellent brand of food, and he is close to needing to be fed an adult food. You could try switching his food to Royal Canin medium breed adult food, or using another brand such as Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. If you do switch his food brand, do it

Hello. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding Purina Dog Chow if your dog is doing well on it. Just because it does not have a fancy name does not make it a bad food & some of the really pricy brands are pretty crappy. Purina, along with Hill's & Royal Canin, are the most respected dog food manufacturers. These companies employ veterinary nutritionists to formulate & test their products on real dogs & this means more to veterinarians than any formula just based on laboratory data. Purina does have a premium line, but I just feed my dogs the Purina One. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Great question! The difference is the ingredients. The pro food will have higher quality ingredients, more specially the protein source and the cuts used in the food. That is why it is more expensive. If you can't afford the pro food, you can try Iams. It's still a high quality food but it is not as expensive as Pro Plan, Eukanuba, and Hills :-)

It is best to get a dog from a breeder that has breeding stock that is OFA certified. Whether or not the vet checks, shots, dewormer are included is up to you. Any dog, but especially a GSD, with hip dysplasia is going to cost you a lot of money and the dog a lot of pain. Go with the OFA tested parents regardless of the price.

Could a chow chow be successfully trained in protection and obedience and to get along with other dogs if trained at a young age by a certified trainer?
It really depends on the individual dog. Virtually all dogs can learn obedience skills as long as the trainer is good, but protection work and getting along with other dogs will depend a lot on his individual personality. If you want a dog to do these things, I would strongly recommend getting a pup from a breeder whose dogs have the qualities that you're looking for - this will dramatically increase the chances that your puppy will have a suitable temperament for these things.

I have read that Chows have more trouble during surgery than other dogs from anesthesia. I realize anything can go wrong. Is it true
Chow chows have the same anesthetic risk as other breeds. It is a well known phenomenon that every breeder thinks that his breed has other requirements than other breeds. Anesthesia is tailored to the individual dog's needs depending on age, history, clinical exam, test results, if available, type of anesthesia available and co-morbidities. So every dog gets the anesthesia that is safest for him or her. Of course there are risk with anesthesia as with any procedure, but we are doing everything possible to minimize those risks. Nowadays anesthesia is far safer than it ever was. No veterinarian (or doctor) wants to lose a patient, so we do our best not to.

Every pet has their own personality, but certain breeds do have certain tendencies that are more common to them. You won't be able to know if Liberty is a loud barker, until you actually hear him bark. Also "loud barking" is a very subjective thing. What is loud to one person may not be loud to another. Give her time to grown and develop into her own personality, which typically occur around 6-8 months of age. I am wanting to purchase a dog from an online ad. This wouldn't be my first option... I know adopting from rescues and breeders are better but I have yet to find a dog that meets my preferences in a shelter & don't have enough money for an expensive
It's great that you're trying to plan ahead and make sure you're asking good questions! I'm not sure what breed you're looking at, but in general, I would definitely consider saving up a bit to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder if you can. Even if the purchase price is a bit higher than a puppy from an online ad, getting a pup from a more reliable source can save you a lot of heartache (and money!) down the line by avoiding costly health issues and behavioral problems due to poor breeding. If you do opt to go ahead and purchase a puppy through on ad online, I would talk to the breeder/seller about the following things: 1) Make sure the puppies are AKC registered. Even if you want "just a pet", no responsible breeder would be breeding dogs that aren't AKC registered. It's a big red flag that you're dealing with a puppy mill or really careless backyard breeder. 2) Ask what health clearances the puppies' parents have had, and ask to see documentation. Yes, adoption fees have become quite high for rescue/shelter dogs. But there is something else for you to consider before you sign on the dotted line. The adoption fee is just the beginning. You must also be able to afford food, routine veterinary care, vaccinations, special medications, possibly grooming, and any other "surprises" that may come up over the course of the dog's life. If you feel you will be able to handle additional, unforeseen costs, you might try city or town shelters rather than the private ones. You can Google "dogs for adoption in (your state)" and you will see all the dogs available in that state. But please remember that the only thing worse than a dog being in a shelter is that dog having to return to the shelter if money runs out.
