My dog swallowed a toothpick and is gagging with mucus. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 56 lbs

I believe my dog has swallowed a toothpick and he keeps gagging as if he’s trying to throw it up but has not been successful with it. This has been happening since last night and today he woke up with something around his mouth, it looks like some sort of mucus.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend having Captain examined by a veterinarian. I am concerned that the toothpick may have become lodged somewhere along the GI tract. This could lead to serious problems so I would recommend having him seen sooner rather than later.
