My cat's chemical burn is infected and won't heal. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 6 lbs

My cat had a chemical burn from hartz flea powder a few months back and every time it heals she scratches it back open. Now it has another one on the bottom of her neck and the original once has gotten bigger and infected... What should I do? Ive had a vet come but all she did was give us burn cream which irritated it further. I'm very worried and need help. What actions should I take to keep my baby healthy and to help her heal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bonnie! That is a terrible infected skin lesion. I would take Bonnie to the Vet. Have all the hair shaved away so we can see the extent of the wounds. If it is truly a burn it may be best for Bonnie and you, since it has been going on for months, to resect the burned infected skin and close it up. Her constantly scratching at the wounds is preventing healing. I just want to mention that it could be skin allergies and eosinophillic granuloma complex as well. As the neck is a common location for this. Allergies are treated with special diets and medications. It is best that Bonnie goes to a vet clinic. I wish you both the best!
