My poodle has a dark spot on his hip. Why is he biting and growling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 12 lbs

About 3 months ago inoticed a perfectly circular dark apricot on my cream poodle's right hip area. I check the skin underneath which looked fine. A month ago I took him to the vet for a stomach bug, bloody diarrhea. It cleared up with metronidazole tx. However, I just finished grooming him and noticed gaurding and pain. He bites after me and growls when I touch any part near where that spot was. He's shaved down and the darkened hair have not grown in anymore, his normal hair color remains.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to know without being able to examine him. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
