My cat always stays in the basement. Is this normal or neglectful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 5 lbs

So my fiancé and I have recently moved in to a two bedroom house with an upstairs, main floor and basement. I was hoping our two girls would get along now that there is a bigger space for them but Lulu has found her way to the basement one day and she just stays down there all the time. Is this okay? We usually have to keep the door closed but there is furniture and blankets food and litter box for her I just want to make sure we aren’t neglecting her so she can have her space from Jax?

If LuLu is happy down there, I'd leave her there. It seems like she has chosen her spot in the home, and I would leave the door open occasionally so she can come up and visit if she wants. Maybe you can leave it propped open just enough so she can come in and out of the basement as she pleases to get love from you and your fiancé. Over time, she may change her mind and want to come and live on the upper levels of the home. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
