My Shih Tzu keeps sitting down. Is it anal glands or back pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 14.6 lbs

My ShihTzu has been sitting down after just a few steps. Also his backside is swinging to the side. He doesn't tolerate anal checking very well, he has to be muzzled. I am asking if you have an idea what might be causing his discomfort?

Often I see anal sac infections, or perianal dermatitis ( skin infection) causing the signs that you are seeing. However, back pain could be another possible cause. If it continues I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Sitting down frequently would have me concerned for something irritating his back end- anal gland issues like you mentioned, mats or stuck stool, or an orthopedic issue all come to mind. If he has had anal gland issues before I would be most suspicious of this. If you don't think you can (safely!) get a good look, I would recommend taking him in. If it is anal gland issues you may want to ask what you can do to prevent them- sometimes certain diets, probiotics or routine checks can be helpful! I hope this helps and Cooper feels better soon!
