My dog's hairless patch won't heal; should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 30 lbs

My dog has had this hairless patch for roughly one year . I brought him to a dermatologist vet who believed it was an autoimmune pyoderma. It’s not spreading - they never did a biopsy and it’s causing my dog to re lick it open . It’s been open for a week . I’m putting topical mupirocin - and giving him clavamox should I take him to another derm vet for biopsy or any vet for surgical removal ? He’s non toxic - just this one spot . He’s a male mini Schnauzer 1.5 years old .

Hello. If the dermatologist suspects this to be an autoimmune pyoderma, then I am surprised that an immune suppressive medication was not prescribed. I think I would recommend getting a second opinion from another veterinary dermatologist. If a round of immune suppressive oral &/or topical medications will not clear this lesion then I would definitely want a biopsy to see what the next step will be.
