My dachshund recovered from paralysis, but has poor balance. Tips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 years and 9 months old | 18 lbs

My dachshund had a spinal injury a couple of months ago that left him paralyzed. We were told he wouldn't be able to walk again, but after following vets order by making him rest and putting him on medicine, he's started walking. He does pretty good and has even learned to run, but his balance is horrible. Is there any therapy or tips I can do to improve his balance? Thank you in advance.

I would still ensure that Freckles is resting plenty and not overdoing it with activity. Dachshunds have a tendency for spinal injuries and if he is feeling better on medicine, it does not mean that the injury is better. Providing plenty of rest for the recommended amount of time should help Freckles make a full recovery. If he worsens and is unable to walk again, I would bring him back in to the veterinarian for a recheck. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
