3-week-old sick kitten: Humidifier vs. cuddles? Is sore bum normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

I am fostering a 3 week old kitten who is sick she is on antibiotics but very congested, she is the last of her litter. I have her set up with a heating pad and a humidifier in a tent like structure to help her breathe. I am conflicted between her need for the humidifier and her need for being held/human interaction. I think affection is important for recovery but do not know if the humidifier or affection is more important? Also her bum gets sore after potty is this normal?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor kitty. Well there is one thing you should know about humidifiers in pets. You only have to do them for 15-20 minute intervals 2-3 times a day, so that will free up some time for you to cuddle with your little fur ball. Affection is important to the recovery of any pet, so kuddos to you for being a caring owner! It is not normal for her bum to be sore. If it looks irritated then she likely has loose stools or really hard stools. You can try applying a small amount of vaseline to the area to get it to heal. If it looks really irritated or if you notice something protruding out of it, then its best to have your vet take a look at it to make sure she doesn't need any antibiotics to help this heal well. I hope this helps! Best of luck with your little kitten and I hope that she gets over her upper airway infection soon!
