Why won't my dog breed if another dog is in the room with them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old

Why wouldn’t my chihuahuas mate when there was another dog in the room? At first I thought it was because Marley was inexperienced then my brother said it’s because they want privacy take coco out of the room as soon as I removed my other dog coco from the room Marley emediatly started trying to mount my female chihuahua Disney I didn’t think dogs cared about privacy I’m just curious as to why they wouldn’t mate because coco was with them

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Marley could have felt subordinate to the other dog. Who gets to mate with females in the wild depends on who is the pack leader or the dominant dog. Marley could also be generally intimated or anxious around this other dog. I am glad you figured out what worked for Marley. Good luck!
