Cat has painful, oozing tail wound. How to help until vet visit?

my cat has came home with a small round open wound buy her tail it is ousing, and she seems in a lot off pain can not relax I can not take her the vet till tomoz morning any advice you can give me for now to help her

Poor Lilo! You can try to gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do for her pain, many human pain medications are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. Do not let her back outside, and keep her in a small, quiet room to herself so she can hopefully relax. Put food, water, and a litter box in this room. I would suggest putting an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking at the wound and making it worse. You can get one at a pet store, or I can put a link below on how to make one at home. I would discontinue the soap and peroxide. They are great for initial wound cleaning and removing bacteria, but continued use can damage healthy tissue and be very irritating and painful. You can just use a warm wet washcloth to clean the wound as needed, or if Fuzz will allow you can run that part of her tail under warm water for 5 minutes at a time to flush out any bacteria that may be present. Bactine is ok. Signs that she should see a vet right away would be a poor appetite, progressive lethargy, swelling around the wound, creamy discharge or a foul-smelling odor, or a rectal temperature over 103. After examination by the vet, they may prescribe antibiotics or other treatments, or may recommend amputation of the tail if any bones are broken. Wounds on a cat tail can be very difficult to treat since there is not a very good blood supply and it is an appendage that moves a lot!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It is difficult to see how deep the wound goes from your pictures. I would make sure that he is not licking the wound and making it worse. You can use a plastic cone around the neck to prevent licking. I would keep the area clean with a diluted solution of Betadine and saline (a light brown color) and clean the wound 2-3 times daily until you can be seen by a vet. He will likely need a course of antibiotics and depending on the depth of the wound, may require a drain be surgically placed in the wound to help facilitate healing and proper drainage. My cat has had this wound I noticed it last night and I don't know if my cat needs to go to the vet or not I'm starting to really worry about her and think she will need a vet to help is there anything I can do in the mean time to help her
I think you're definitely on the right track with planning a vet visit. If have her seen to make sure the wound doesn't need surgical attention and medications to encourage healing. Wounds can often have a lot of depth around them called "dead space". As the wounds try to heal that area can fill up with inflammatory fluid and eventually turn to pus, causing infection. In the mean time, you can always find a baby onesie or even a tiny dog T shirt for her to wear if it will cover the wound until you have her seen. It may help keep her from licking the area excessively, which can cause additional trauma, inflammation, and infection. Or you can order a soft cone on amazon or pick one up at your local pet store to prevent the self trauma. Good Luck!

I don't know how this happened to our male cat's tail, but this is how it looks now. He's an outdoor cat. Any ideas? Is this surgery worthy or self healing?
This looks like is may be a bite wound abscess that ruptured. Ideally, it should be addressed by your veterinarian. Surgery may be indicated to clean and flush the wound. Antibiotics and pain medication may also be indicated. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. You may need to confine him indoors until he is healed.

Hi. My cat has a wart on her tail (get looked at it and said not to worry too much about it as long as we keep is clean). But now my cat licked and bit it open and it started bleeding. I cleaned it,but Beatdine ointment on with gauze and a bandage. D
Poor girl. You did the right thing with the Betadine. There are no safe over the counter pain medicaitons for cats, so I highly encourage you not to use any of them. You can apply a cold compress on the area to see if this helps with some of the discomfort, if tolerated. At this pont she neds to have this wart removed surgically, or at the very least treated with antibiotics to see if it will heal somewhat. Visit you vet soon to have this treated and hopefully she doesn't have to have surgery. : ( Best of luck with your pet Luna and I hope that her bleeding mass resolves soon. Take care.

Oh ouch! That looks really painful! I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Topical antibiotics may be needed as well as pain medication. Unfortunately there is nothing safe for pain medication over the counter for cats. I agree that the cone is important to keep him from making it worse in the meantime. I need to know how to treat a wound / gash on my cats tail. It was bleeding this morning and he won’t let me cover it
Tails can be very difficult to keep wrapped or bandaged. Consider an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking and to allow healing. That wound in the image should be addressed by your veterinarian. Ideally, the hair around it should be clipped to prevent contamination. The wound itself should be gently cleaned. Sutures may be indicated if it is a fresh wound or deep wound. Antibiotics and pain management may also be indicated.

I am so incredibly sorry this has happened to your cat Gulabo. I would start by placing an e-collar on her straight away so she can't bite or lick the wound. This will cause further tissue trauma and may introduce infection. It appears to be Cat bite woulnd, unfortunately these types of wounds are very likely to form an abcess. Which is an accumulation of Bacteria and dead and dying white blood cells. This forms puss and accumulates when wounds close over infection, under the skin, until it bursts. Due this high likelihood for an abcess, as well as the fact that the would is currently open and bleeding, I would advise taking Gulabo to the veterinarian as soon as you can. The vet will clean the wound by flushing it with saline. The vet may need to place a surgical drain in order to prevent pus building up and an abcess forming. The vet can also prescribe medications such a as antibiotics, pain relief, and anti-inflammatories to make Gulabo comfortable and help the healing process.

If there are puncture wounds, it's likely Sadie was bitten by something causing the hairless, and that can lead to infection. She may need antibiotics to treat the infection, and the vet can prescribed that. Please do not put any neosporin or topical antibiotic ointment on her tail. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. The vet can prescribe oral antibiotics if needed.

Oh no, poor Naqusha! Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Boop by Petco to prescribe any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your cat. I would call around to find the closest vet in your country to take him into as he really does need veterinary treatment for it. You can gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and I would put a bandage over it to keep it clean and dry. Do not allow Naqsha to go outside if he's allowed outside, and I would put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. I can give you a link on how to make one at home.
