My dog is lean, whining, and vomiting. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 14 days old | 20 lbs

My dog Buddy is very lean, whining and whimpering instead of barking, and has been vomiting. I am very concerned because he came from a very poor family and was not given proper nutrition and was living in a cage. Should I be concerned?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Buddy seems off and is whimpering and vomiting, he may have something going on causing him discomfort. Because of his age, I would be suspicious of a viral infection, something he ate that he is having an indiscretion to or a foreign object he ate that is lodged somewhere in his intestines causing problems. Because there are multiple causes and it is difficult to determine what it is for sure, I would have a veterinarian examine Buddy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would consider having his blood tested and abdominal x-rays taken. I hope this helps and that Buddy gets better soon! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
