Why did my feral cat colony population suddenly shrink? Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 0 lbs

Hello. I have ( had) a feral cat colony of about 25 cats. My question is, my cat colony has dwindled from 25 cats.. To about 5 cats, over the course of 3 weeks. Is this normal?? I am concerned about the cats and what has happened to them. Us it normal for cat colonies to drop their population?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jewel Haines

It is difficult to say if this is "normal" or not. Typically, you would expect an increase in the Spring with new litters being born. There may be increased predation, wandering off or other causes for a decrease in the population. If you are not finding carcasses or bodies, possibilities include predation, accidents, malicious behaviors, illness and roaming.
