My cat lost a nail. Should I soak or use ointment for infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 8 years old

hi, my cat recently lost his whole nail. It was bleeding the first day and then stopped. 2 days later he reopened the cut and it was bleeding again. Probably from jumping off something. It isn't bleeding anymore but I was wondering if you think I should soak it every night and/or put some sort of polysporin type ointment on it? He's walking fine and acting normal. But I worry of maybe it getting infected? Thoughts? Thank you Katrina

As long as it is not painful , swollen and/or does not have a purulent discharge (pus), there is no need to put an antibiotic on the wound. Of the paw swells or the toe, or if he starts to limp or bother the wound , you should take Stylo to a vet for an exam. Do not soak the paw, as this may damage the new cells that grow to heal the wound.
