Why is my 3-month-old puppy sleeping so much and not energetic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 29 days old | 25 lbs

Hello. We've just adopted a puppy from the Humane Society. He's 3 ms old.We do not know his breed. We were told that he was VERY shy, and he is. But what concerns me is that he sleeps ALOT! He eats really well, poops and pees well. But he just doesn't seem very energetic. When we take him outside, he will run and play a bit with our 3 yr old pup, but inside, it's mostly sleep. Should we be worried? Thank you.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Short answer is not necessarily. Not all puppies are highly energetic and pretty much all puppies sleep a lot. It also takes some time for them to get used to their new environment. I would give him more time for him to come along especially since he is otherwise doing so well. If at any point he develops symptoms of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, he is likely to be just fine. Good luck!
