Senior cat with kidney disease and liquid stool. Can a vet help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 lbs

I have a 16 year old cat recently diagnosed with renal failure. Tonight he started leaking liquid stool from his anus. I will take him to the vet but what can a vet do for this problem? Are there drugs to help? Or is this just what he will live with in his short time left? I don't want him to suffer.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. Sometimes cats in renal failure start to develop other issues concurrently, his guts are likely upset leading to diarrhoea. Depending on the cause the vet may be able to treat it with antibiotics and probiotics if an infection or inflammation is present. I think it certainly would be worth giving treatment a try for a few days. Unfortunately renal failure can be very hard on cats and you both have my utmost sympathy.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Poor Gizmo. I am sorry to hear of the diagnosis. Diarrhea can occur in renal failure patients. It is good to hear she still has an appetite, however. You can try adding plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to his food to help firm up his stool. Probiotics can also help too. If Gizmo is still having more good days than bad days then he may still have some fight in him. Renal failure patients can live for a while if their symptoms are controlled and placed on medications and SQ fluids to help. Thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
