Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 14 lbs
We have a mating pair of Maine Coon cats and this is the first time we've tried to have a litter. Our question concerns the length of the female's heat cycle. If the male successfully mounts and mates her, does her heat cycle immediately end, or will it continue on for several days?

What gorgeous cats! Cats are induced ovulators, meaning that mating will causes them to ovulate. Most females require three to four matings within a 24 hour period for ovulation to occur. After a few matings, their heat cycle will shorten in length. Eggs will be released in response to a hormone surge that is triggered by the breeding. After ovulation has occured, she should go out of heat within a day or two. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
