How can you tell if a lump on a female dogs breast is probably cancer over just an infection in the mammary gland without having to go to the vet. I would like to have an idea before hand so I can kind of prepare my elderly grandmother.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no way to tell if a lump in the mammary gland is cancer or benign with out a fine needle aspirate (which still may not tell you 100%) or removing the mass and biopsying it. Mammary gland infections are rare. The smaller the mass the more likely it’s benign. Spaying a dog before too many heat cycles has proven to protect against mammary cancer in dogs. I wish you the best!
