My rabbit's nail broke. Should I use Neosporin or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 11 days old | 3.5 lbs

My bunny's nail broke and fell off. It looks pretty bad (hard to get a picture of it). He's acting fine today, running around and eating, last night he seemed to shake and his eyes rolled back (lasted 3 seconds) but I think it was because of the pain. I put Neosporin on it and he seems okay. I want your opinion if I should take him to a get or just make sure it stays clean. I'm a broke college student so any advice helps.

Be very careful with putting antibiotic ointment on any wound on your rabbit as this can upset their digestive system very seriously, if they lick the ointment off. Do nothing more and just observe the wound. If it happens to become infected (red, painful, hot, discharge of pus) then take your rabbit to a vet for an exam and injectable antibiotics.,
