My puppy ate trash and is sick. Is vomiting and shaking normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Male | 4 months and 15 days old | 49 lbs

My puppy will not eat, he threw up when he tried a couple bites of his food, and is shaking and panting. We know he got into the garbage but don't know what he ate. It's been approx 18 hrs since he got into the garbage. He was ok at 11pm when we went to bed but by 6am when we got up he was ill. Is this a normal response to eating something bad ?

I wouldn't say it is a normal response. It sounds as Gryphon is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
