My dog has head cancer. How can I safely reduce facial swelling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 65 lbs

My dag has cancer, it is focused in his head. I keep the cut the vet made high over his right eye open so he continues to drain but he has a lot of swelling under his left eye up the bridge of his nose. The vet told me his face was going to continue to swell but I would like to cut the swelling that going on, on the left side to let it drain as well. How deep and where should I cut?

I would NOT recommend doing this at all - cutting into your dog's head at home without sedation would be cruel and very painful, and there is a significant risk that you could cause serious damage or even death. If you're concerned about the swelling, please take Chuko back to your vet for a recheck to discuss options. In my experience, most nasal tumors like this are made of solid tissue and are not fluid-filled, so cutting into the swollen area is not likely to be helpful and may cause serious bleeding or infection.
