New puppy crate time: How much is too much & can I hold him often?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 26.6 lbs

Picking up this puppy on Tuesday, just a few days shy of 8weeks. We have a crate ready. How much time should he be spending in the crate or out of crate playing? Should we avoid carrying or holding too much?

The crate should be mainly for night time and when you are not at home and he stays unsupervised, the rest of the time he should be outside the crate. there is no specific restriction regarding carrying or holding him as long as he is not sleeping or tired.
