My cat vomited a worm. What kind is it and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My 10yr. old cat vomited a few times over several hours. The last time was mostly flem and this worm. I put it under a magnifier and took this picture with my phone. Could you please tell me what it could be? Thank you, Linda

I’m going to guess that this is a roundworm. It can be difficult to identify adult worms but it is usually much easier to identify eggs in a stool sample. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a stool analysis and to get the appropriate deworming medication.

This looks like a roundworm. He probably coughed/vomited it up. They are intestinal parasites that many animals have, younger ones in particular. Having your veterinarian run a fecal sample will confirm if he has roundworms and also check for other intestinal parasites. You can purchase roundworm dewormer at PetCo. Cats may occasionally vomit up roundworms, but they look more like spaghetti. Submit the 'worms' and a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites. Your vet can then dispense or administer an appropriate dewormer. The treatment may have to be repeated in 2-3 weeks.
