My young cat is having seizures. What causes them and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 months old | 5 lbs

Hi. My soon to be 6 months old male cat, Chewy, got what I believe are seizures. First time was Wednesday 11th and lasted 60-80 seconds and was a grand mal case. Second time happened today, again the whole body was in convulsions but I was able to stop it by scruffing him, which calmed the convulsions almost immediately. Both times happened after he got outside and took a few steps. I am really worried and don’t have a lot of money for expensive vet cares. Any advices would be appreciated.

Hi. Poor Chewy. Each seizure takes a full on the body and brain, so he does need veterinary care and assistance. There isn't anything at home or from this site that we can recommend in this case other than he needs to be seen right away. The potential causes of these seizures include a congenital disease of the brain, an infection in the brain or affecting the brain, toxins, trauma, or unknown cause of epilepsy. Please get max seen right away.
