My puppy was dewormed, but I don't see worms. Is that normal?

I dewormed my puppy at 6 weeks and 8 weeks using a 4 way dewormer and he has never expelled any worms or rice like specks that I have noticed should I be concerned?

She could be but it's still possible she has worms. A negative fecal does not ensure they are 100% worm free. It is still recommend to have 2 more dewormings prior to 6 months of age. Pets can give people worms so it's very important to keep up with the basic standard of care. It will not hurt her to have the dewormings. I hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Bruce. Sometimes when pets are dewormed no dead worms are seen in the feces. This can be completely normal. Typically if worms are passed it's within 12-24 hours of the deworming dose. Intestinal worms can be very devastating in puppies not only robbing nutrition from the gut but also blood. Hookworms attach to the lining of the intestine and feed off of blood. This can be significant enough to kill a small puppy. If you add some fleas on that puppy who also suck blood, puppies can get into real trouble. So with intestinal worms, you can see low red blood cell counts (anemia), abdominal distention, low or no appetite, abdominal cramping/pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of energy/lethargy, poor skin condition, poor hair coat, shock, and even death secondary to the anemia/loss of appetite, etc. You should deworm every 3 weeks for hookworms and roundworms for at least 3-4 treatments. All puppies have worms. All of them. It is rare to actually see them in the stools so when you do, it is usually because they have a heavy burden. A puppy should be dewormed every time they get their vaccines and then once a month with their heartworm prevention for life. Don't worry about it right now as the worms are dying. Just make sure she gets dewormed again at her next vaccine appointment.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Trixxi is very cute! Sounds like the dewormer is working properly. Sometimes dead worms pass and sometimes they get digested on the way out. It depends on where they are in the intestinal tract when they are killed by the dewormer. Yes, you are correct. Puppies need to be dewormed every 3 weeks at least 3-4 times depending on what age you start the dewormer and if they are taking heartworm prevention that has a dewormer in it. Most heartworm medicines have an intestinal dewormer in it, so once that is started, that can substitute for your puppy dewormings. I would advise that you get her seen by your veterinarian so her puppy vaccines stay updated and that she is monitored for good health. Also, your vet can discuss proper flea/tick and heartworm products. Good luck with Trixxi.

Hello and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Parasite eggs are microscopic so I'm wondering if what you're seeing in the stool is actually eggs. It could be adult roundworms or even tapeworm eggs. It is not uncommon to see the adult roundworms as they are killed by the deworming process. If it is tapeworm eggs, you may need to end up treating for fleas (as this is how tapeworms are spread). The Dolpac should help treat for tapeworms and the praziquantel should be effective for giardia and roundworms. It is possible that you may end up needed to retreat but I suspect what you are seeing may be normal for the deworming process. Definitely take a fecal sample back to your veterinarian in about 3 weeks to ensure the infection is cleared. Also the prevent reinfection make sure to clean up your dogs feces from the yard. If at any time Echo seems to be acting ill or has diarrhea I would take her back to your veterinarian.

If you came to me, what I would do is have you bring in a fecal sample with you to the appointment. I would perform a fecal float and take a look under the microscope for evidence of any parasites. If I didn't see any, I would not prescribe a dewormer unless you were still reporting active diarrhea or a fat belly on Titan. Some vets do like to treat a minimum number of times, whiles others are a little more conservative. It all boils down to who you ask. Hope this helps.

No, it's not necessary for a dog to vomit or have diarrhea after being dewormed. It's a side effect but it doesn't happen to all dogs. A lot of times, the only sign of worms in dogs is eggs in the poop, which are microscopic. It will still be working even if you don't see worms in Ember's poop.

Worms can be common in young puppies, but it doesn't mean it's normal. She definitely needs another dose of the deworming medication, and I would give it to her now. Give her another dose in two weeks to kill all the worms, and then deworm her monthly until she is six months. After that, she should be dewormed every three months. I hope this helps!

It's possible it could also be a hookworm. This can be a normal occurrence after deworming. And I would recommend deworming again in 2 weeks. No need to be concerned. I have dewormed my little pup 2x and I would just like know what are some signs that they are gone?
It is very likely that after worming your puppy twice (second time about 2-3 weeks after the first time) it has no more worms for a while. THe only way to know for sure is to take a fresh stool sample to your vet for a fecal exam.

Yes, it's normal to see dead worms coming out in her poop a few days after being dewormed - this means that the medication is working. As long as she is acting normal otherwise, this shouldn't be any cause for concern :)
