What safe puppy food should I feed my 7-week-old Pit Bull Mastiff?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 19 days old | 3.1 lbs

I have found a lot of conflicting information on what to feed our puppy. This is my first puppy, but my fiancée has had dogs since she was a baby. Our puppy is a pit bull mastiff mix, but at 7 weeks she is only 3.1 pounds as of 2 days ago at her wellness vet visit. I am planning on purchasing Orijen Large breed puppy chow, but their bag states to feed based on her potential breed size, but I am worried that will be too much at her weight. Can you give me a definitive answer to what to feed her.

I do not recommend Orijen at all. It's grain free, and grain free food is a dangerous fad in dogs. Vets are seeing an increase in dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs fed grain free food, and the FDA is investigating that link. Grains are good for dogs, and there is absolutely no scientific proof or any study that has proven grains are bad for dogs. I would feed Willow a brand like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Feed according to their instructions, and make sure it's a puppy food. Best of luck,
